LED UV vs UV Drying & UV Varnish on Label Printing Machine - Differences Explained

LED UV vs UV Drying & UV Varnish on Label Printing Machine - Differences Explained

What is the difference between LED UV, UV Drying and UV High Gloss on Label Printing Machine?

First let’s clarify core concepts (plain explanation for adhesive sticker printing industry):

These three items are not in the same category:

LED UV curing and traditional UV drying (Mercury UV) = two types of curing light sources / curing equipment for label printing machine, to fully dry inks and varnish.

UV high gloss varnish = a printing process known as UV overcoating. It is a layer of transparent gloss varnish, which can be cured with either light source above.

In short: LED UV curing and mercury UV dryer refer to curing methods; UV high gloss varnish is a surface UV overcoating process.

1. LED UV Curing VS Traditional UV Drying (Mercury UV Dryer) - Comparison of Two Curing Systems

Both serve the same purpose for label printing machine: UV ink and UV varnish are cured and dried by ultraviolet light. The difference lies in the light source.

1.1 Traditional UV Drying (Mercury UV Dryer, standard for old label printing machine)

Light source: High-pressure mercury lamp with broad-spectrum UV, high heat generation.

✅ Advantages

  • Full spectrum, easier curing for thick ink layers, dark solid colors and heavy coating of UV high gloss varnish;

  • Wide selection of inks & varnishes with lower cost; simple retrofitting on old machines for adhesive sticker printing;

❌ Disadvantages

  • Needs several minutes preheating, cannot turn on/off instantly; lamps stay on during idle time, high power consumption;

  • High temperature (60~90℃). PVC, PE and thin film labels tend to shrink, wrinkle or curl under heat;

  • Produces ozone with strong odor in workshop, requires strong exhaust ventilation;

  • Short lamp lifespan (800–1500 hours), frequent lamp replacement;

  • High energy consumption.

1.2 LED UV Curing (Mainstream upgrade for new & retrofitted label printing machine)

Light source: LED UV diode (common wavelength:385/395nm), cold light source.

✅ Advantages

  • Instant on without preheating, power saving for short runs with frequent start-stop in adhesive sticker printing;

  • Very low heat output, small temperature rise on substrates. Suitable for film and thermal adhesive labels;

  • No ozone, low odor, better workshop environment;

  • Long service life 20000–30000 hours, lower long-term maintenance cost;

  • Web can be rewound & stacked right after printing, no powder spraying required generally for UV overcoating.

❌ Disadvantages

  • Must use special LED UV ink / LED varnish. Cannot directly mix with ordinary mercury UV dryer consumables;

  • Single wavelength. Too thick ink or dark solid color may lead to surface cured but uncured bottom layer (false curing) with improper parameters;

  • Higher initial investment cost for label printing machine purchase or retrofitting.

Important Note: Inks are NOT interchangeable!        Ordinary mercury UV ink most likely fails to cure under LED UV curing. LED dedicated ink may not cure perfectly under mercury UV dryer lamp.

2. What is UV High Gloss Varnish?

UV high gloss varnish = UV overcoating process. Apply a layer of transparent UV gloss varnish (full or partial coating) on printed labels with label printing machine, then cure by UV lamp (mercury UV dryer or LED UV curing).

Effects: High glossy surface, scratch resistance, wear resistance, improved color saturation and protection for printed ink in adhesive sticker printing.

Corresponding options: UV matte, UV frosted, spot UV and so on.

Core Logical Relationship

UV high gloss varnish is only a varnish coating layer, it cannot dry by itself and must work with curing system:

Solution A: Printing → apply UV high gloss varnish → Traditional mercury UV dryer

Solution B: Printing → apply UV high gloss varnish → LED UV curing

That means:

✅【LED UV curing + UV high gloss varnish】is available

✅【Traditional mercury UV dryer + UV high gloss varnish】is available

UV high gloss varnish is surface finish effect, LED UV curing / mercury UV dryer is curing method for UV overcoating; they belong to different dimensions.

3. Practical Summary for Adhesive Sticker Printing Production

If you are choosing curing system for your label printing machine:

  • Mostly print PVC, PE, thin film and thermal labels → Prefer LED UV curing to avoid material curling & deformation

  • Large batch thick solid ink, dark full-surface print, tight budget, keep existing standard UV ink → Traditional mercury UV dryer

How to distinguish UV high gloss varnish and UV drying:

  • Customer asks for glossy finish → refers to UV high gloss varnish for UV overcoating (process)

  • Machine configuration: LED UV curing or standard mercury UV dryer → refers to lamp type for ink/varnish curing on label printing machine

4. Common Pitfalls & Reminders

  • When retrofitting mercury lamp machine to LED UV curing, all varnish and ink must be replaced with LED-specific ones for UV overcoating;

  • For UV high gloss varnish with LED UV curing, excessive varnish coating may cause sticky surface and poor adhesion;

  • Although LED UV curing runs cold, good water cooling is mandatory. Lamp head still accumulates heat during long time high-speed production on label printing machine;

  • The same UV high gloss varnish cured by different lamps has slight difference in gloss and abrasion resistance. Always make trial samples before mass adhesive sticker printing production.
